Caffè Grieco was founded when Francesco Grieco’s great passion and professionalism led him to the Milan trade show, driven by the desire to make his dream come true.
Francesco and his brothers approached the world of coffee with tireless enthusiasm, learning the secrets of coffee roasting in the 1960s, when the city of Matera still lacked profitable businesses. The roasting company’s first location was established way back in 1963, in the heart of the Sassi of Matera, at Via S. Stefano 63, equipped with an old wood-fired machine; it was here that the story of Caffè Grieco began, with roots stretching back to a family tradition that has evolved into expertise and experience dedicated to serving the customer. Originally, the product was distributed and sold in various grocery stores, general stores, and small cafés throughout the city of Matera.
In the 1960s, to boost coffee sales and phase out the local custom of using barley, a kitchen item was included with every coffee purchase. In the 1990s, Francesco Grieco was joined by his son Cosimo, who actively contributed to the company’s growth, leading to the opening in 2011 of a new facility equipped with state-of-the-art machinery capable of producing high-quality coffee that meets consumers’ tastes. The end result is a coffee with a bold and intense flavor, backed by ongoing research into raw materials sourced from the finest plantations in South America.
